How do I teach my dog to stack?
Short positive sessions, one leg at a time, rewarding stillness. Hand stacking and free stacking explained.
Teach the stack in short, positive sessions with treats or a toy. Build it up one leg at a time and reward stillness.
Steps for a hand stack
- Start with the dog standing on a non-slip surface.
- Set the front legs straight under the shoulders, lifting from the elbow.
- Set the rear legs so the hocks are in the position your breed standard describes.
- Hold the head or bait gently to keep the dog focused.
- Reward after a second or two of stillness, then release.
Free stacking
Some breeds are shown free-stacked, standing on their own while watching bait. Teach the dog to walk into a square stance and hold it for a reward.
Tips
- Keep sessions to a few minutes
- Use a mirror or video to check your work
- Practise in new places so the dog copes with distractions
- End on a good stand
