What ring etiquette should I know for my first show?

Arrive early, follow the steward, keep focus on your dog and the judge, and be gracious afterwards.

Arrive early, know your ring and time, listen to the steward and keep your attention on your dog and the judge. That covers most of it.

Before you go in

  • Check the catalogue or schedule for your class and ring
  • Collect your armband and wear it where the rules say
  • Toilet and warm up your dog well before your class
  • Have bait and a comb in your pocket

In the ring

  • Line up where the steward directs you
  • Leave space between your dog and the next one
  • Follow the judge’s directions for the gait pattern
  • Don’t chat with the judge or talk about your dog’s breeding
  • Keep bait tidy and don’t drop it near other dogs

After judging

Congratulate the winners. Thank the judge if you have a chance. Keep your thoughts to yourself until you’re well away from the ring.

Be kind to yourself

Everyone makes mistakes at a first show. The dog won’t mind if you do.
