A day-by-day countdown to a conformation show: grooming timing, ring rehearsals, packing and show-day routine.
Show preparation starts months ahead, but the last two weeks set the tone. This plan assumes your dog already knows the basics of stacking and gaiting. Adjust the grooming timeline for your breed and coat, and follow your kennel club’s rules.
Days 14 to 10: Assess and plan
- Stand your dog in front of a mirror and video a few gaits
- Compare what you see with the breed standard
- List the grooming work needed and when
- Trim nails, then keep them short every few days
Days 9 to 7: Coat and condition
Do any major trimming or stripping now so the coat has time to settle. Keep exercise steady, not sudden. Watch your dog’s weight and energy.
Days 6 to 4: Ring rehearsal
Run full practice sessions: stack, examination by a friend, down and back, and around. Practise somewhere new each time. Keep sessions short and fun. Review stacking basics if anything slips.
Day 3: Pack
- Crate and bedding
- Grooming kit and table
- Bait, water, bowls and food
- Lead, armband clip and comb
- Paperwork and entry confirmation
- Clean-up bags and towels
Day 2: Bath and finish
For many coats, the main bath goes in a day or two before the show. Dry carefully and finish the trim. Keep the dog clean and rested afterwards.
Day 1: Light day
A short, easy walk. One brief stack practice that ends with a win. Check the show schedule and plan your travel so you arrive early.
Show day morning
- Arrive early and set up calmly
- Walk and toilet the dog
- Touch up grooming close to ring time
- Check in with the steward and find your ring
In the ring
Breathe. Present the dog, follow the judge, keep the lead loose and smile. Read first-show etiquette for the details.
Afterwards
Praise your dog whatever the result. Write down what went well and what to work on. Every show teaches something.
The full approach is in the show prep guide. Conditioning is general guidance, not veterinary advice.
